Regular Talking Bull contributor, and part-time ‘Ground Guide Guru’, Simon Wright looks back on the Bulls’ 2-2 draw at Larkhall Athletic yesterday. He claims Hereford fans have to start facing up to the fact the team might not win every game!
I need a new attitude.. and, I venture to suggest, do some other Hereford supporters.
Truth is, we’ve been spoilt. We’ve been dining for too long in the football equivalent of a Michelin starred restaurant.
“Victories Sir? How do you like them – regular, overcooked or slaughtered? We always offer 3 points here”.
“Stylish footballers? just pick from our specials menu”.
“Goals? Virtually unlimited here, as fast as the chef can make them”.
“Trophies? Naturally, served …with photo opportunities, a civic parade and lots of souvenirs on the side”.
“Defeats? Only when in season .. and it is a very short season”
Give supporters virtually everything they want one season, and next season they’ll expect the same or even more. “Give you lot the stars and next year you’ll want the moon too”, said one Championship Chairman to me, only half-joking. Its human nature.
Thus at the moment I’m moaning through games, with far too much negativity. Every club has a bad patch in every season. This is ours but it feels so much worse as we’re used to.. and now expect the best. I think I realised just how unreasonable I’d become when I was lamenting to a Larkhall season ticket holder how the draw would delay our winning the title.
“It’s a nice problem to have…” he replied gently. What an a=== I must have sounded like. Similar to what I call Villa-like arrogance.
But no more for me. I (and we) all need to remember where we came from and it doesn’t take much in a volunteer run club for everything to fall apart. Let’s celebrate what we do have. And B Blockers – If I complain about our team next Saturday, tell me off.
