Monty Ron, Talking Bull’s gardening correspondent provides hints and tips. He likens garden plants to Hereford footballers he’s known!

It’s a lovely time of year. Don’t forget that, like footballers in early-season training, hot dry days mean you must use more water. Then your results will be bountiful. Well, sometimes.

I’ve been setting out a new border for my friend in Dilwyn (see picture).

My selection is based on past experience, and I have to chuckle, some of these plants behave like some footballers I’ve known at Hereford. What do you think of these?

Selected Variety Characteristics Hereford Player
Agapanthus Tall and lanky. You never know what you’re going to get on the day. Can be superb, can be ordinary, but when it’s good it’s brilliant. Jim Hinch (1972)
Climbing Rose ‘Teasing Georgia’ A handsome plant with flowers like rosettes. Has delivered well for me in the past but this one is slow to climb. Adrian Foster (1997)
Cosmos Looks good and has many admirers. But you know it will be finished after one season. Steve Piearce (1999)
Erysimum Bursting with multiple deliveries every season. The first name on my team sheet. Keyon Reffell
Fuchsia Highly dependable old favourite. Comes back season after season. Improves with age. Ryan Green

Just write to me with your gardening enquiries. All questions answered apart from lawns. Even I don’t how they’ve got that Edgar Street pitch looking so good!
