Our very own Hereford Hophead, aka Ian Mann, has delved into the real ale options for travelling Bulls fans who’re intent on making the trip up to Guiseley on Saturday.

GUISELEY AFC

Saturday, 8 December.

I have to admit that before the fixture lists came out I didn’t actually know where Guiseley was. I’d assumed that it was up near Middlesbrough somewhere, I think I was confusing it with Guisborough.

Anyway, Guiseley is a small town in West Yorkshire, just north of Leeds and Bradford, so it’ll be two trips to this part of the world in quick succession with Park Avenue our next scheduled opponents.

I’m indebted to Simon Wright who has already done some research and has suggested Coopers at 4-6 Otley Road, LS20 8AH as a suitable venue. Part of the Market Town Taverns group, Coopers always offers an Okell’s beer and there are usually offerings from Rooster’s and Timothy Taylor’s plus five guest ales, usually sourced from Yorkshire breweries. The pub has an extensive food menu including nachos, sandwiches, burgers and more traditional pub offerings, although it’s not cheap, by either Herefordshire or Yorkshire standards. One suspects that you probably need to book for food, website is http://www.markettowntaverns.co.uk/pub-and-bar-finder/yorkshire/coopers/ and telephone 01943 878835. The pub is about ten minutes from the ground and also handy for the station.

The GBG only has one entry for Guiseley, the Guiseley Factory Workers Club at 6 Town Street, LS20 9DT which positively welcomes CAMRA members on the production of a membership card or a copy of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. A social hub for the town the Club is fully committed to real ale with three changing guest beers sourced both locally and nationally and with one pump usually dedicated to a dark beer. The Club has three rooms, including a snooker room if you fancy a frame while you’re here. No food but the Club has an excellent reputation for the quality of its ale, which I suspect retails at something of a bargain price.

Finally, Simon mentions the local branch of Morrisons which has a handpump serving Saltaire Blonde in the café area, the only UK Morrisons to offer this facility. An interesting novelty, and at least there’ll be something to eat too!
