With the new signing of Jordan Williamson, to add to Cawley Cox and advice man Andy Williams, its hard to remember the last time that the Bulls had so many genuine local people in the ranks. “There’s good talent within the Herefordshire area” insisted Aaron Downes to the official site. That’s a rare statement indeed from a Hereford gaffer. Could it be that with our Man of Mudgee living just a hour away, he actually has time to check our local clubs? As opposed to his predecessors who spent so many hours on the motorways, there was no capacity left to look the other side of our massed ranks of floodlights.
The perceived lack of looking has created some resentment in recent years, though probably without much foundation until the Welsh spotted our Cox. Even then, Cawley’s progress was not straightforward.
In February this year, one fan fumed that “Jords” had not been signed by the Bulls. “Just don’t understand Hereford’s mentality.” I could. In February, Hereford had a rookie, temporary manager in charge with a big problem to wrestle with.
Is it possible to be any more local than Jordan Williamson? Born in the city. Lives in the city., Works in the county – presumably as a roofer. He’s always played for a Hereford-based team (Pegasus since 2018) His long term partner is local. His large family all live in Hereford. No doubt many of our local supporters will know at least one family member. Its Hereford. That is how it works.
Dare we imagine (with due respect to our other strikers ) an all-Hereford forward line. How good would that sound? And what message might that send to young players across the county. Yes you can! Sounds almost too good to be true.
I have to sound a note of caution. Jordan was prolific – very – in Step 5. The jump from there to a League stuffed with full timers, cynical old pros, black art practitioners and a high level of fitness – its a mighty big leap. Jordan is 26, that’s frankly a mature age to be moving up.
We have no reserve side – its one big jump. Hopefully Jordan can bridge the gap quickly.
