Hereford manager Aaron Downes has expressed his delight at signing Kam Kandola from Kidderminster Harriers. Kandola is to be teamed up with Kyle Howkins at the heart of the Hereford defence as outlined at the Fans Forum held last night. Coach Harry Pell revealed the detail the young defender was provided with during his signing for the Edgar Street based club.
Manager Aaron Downes added: “I’m excited about Kam – he’s a good character and fantastic addition to our squad, and I’m happy the club’s backed me with a two-year deal. He’s got good experience for his age, coming off two play-off campaigns, one of which he’s won. It’s a great signing for us and a great opportunity for him, because he can come to a historic football club, continue his development and be successful.”
Kamran was born in Wolverhampton and developed via the Wolves Academy system from the age of 6 and
because of his family’s Sikh Punjabi background, he received additional support from the PFA’s British Asian Programme. The group is markedly under-represented in the English professional game. The initiative has good intentions and for years Kam was a patient and appreciative ambassador, dealing with the extra media attention.
His father Karma was interviewed on Sky Sports and said “as a family and as a community, we are all immensely proud of Kam, who has shown exemplary commitment and dedication to try and make it at the highest level.” He features in a 2023 children’s football activity book and was the first port of call when the Community side were running anti-racism events.
He was mainly a central defender throughout his academy years although Kam once played in goal after an injury in a Premier League 2 game against West Ham. He kept a clean sheet and saving a penalty!
He left Wolves in September 2024 after 77 Academy appearances when part of their U21 squad. He was contracted for a further season but chose to leave – hungry for the challenge of first team football. Playing in mens football had more appeal. “It’s where I needed to be” he told Hereford FC media officer Gregg Davies last week.
Whilst in charge at Kidderminster Phil Brown saw his potential and in late September that year the defender was pitched into the non-league equivalent of a wet night in Stoke – making a debut against Alfreton. He had to learn quickly and he did. So much so, he made 35 appearances that term and was awarded the Young Player of the Season. Said manager Brown “Kam has been a revelation this season. His transition from Academy football to the senior ham has been seamless, and his attitude and performance have been exemplary.” He was primarily a ball-playing central defender though is also comfortable in midfield.
In 25-26, he added another 35 Harriers appearances to his CV. He was an unused substitute in only 7 matches and missed out on the 16-man squad a mere four times all season. Bulls fans may recall that Kam started against Hereford in the Easter 2026 match. Wierdly, his only League goal was at South Shields in December. He was switched between centre midfield, defensive midfield and centre back.
Our new arrival is not a goal scorer. Yet to everyone’s surprise, Kam’s deft feet confirmed promotion for the Harriers. With only minutes left and Harriers 1-0 up at South Shields in the Play-Off Final, Kandola dodged flying tackles to score a second goal. Minutes later, he was clutching the trophy. He’d played a very full part in the Worcestershire clubs’ promotion. Being part of a surprisingly long list of released players that summer probably hurt.
When you’re released by Kidderminster, there are precious full-time options locally. For most, it’s find a job and play part-time. But join Hereford and you get noticed. Given Kam’s age (22) and pedigree, a two-year deal feels very wise. His agents Nork Sports Group were pleased.
“It’s a massive club, I’m excited to be here and hopefully we can push on this year,” said the 22-year-old. “When I was at Kidderminster we pushed for promotion and I want to do the same here. I want to push for the play-offs and try to get promoted. I’ve got high hopes for the squad and the management staff have been really good.”
Welcome to the Street, Kam.
