Ah Spennymoor, the home of the Teletubbies creator and also former base of Bobby Shafto. (Not a porn star, he was an 18th century local MP subject of a famous song). Their modern best-known town ambassadors are our next visitors to the Street. Whilst they won’t be quaking in their boots, our recent record of WIN WIN WIN gives them food for thought.

Home matches against the likeable North-east club are usually very watchable. The last encounter saw the Bulls recover from a goal behind to win 2-1 with two spectacular strikes, including one from then in form Jason Cowley. After several high scoring draws, this was our first home victory over Spennymoor, only our second in total in 11 meetings. A positive result to add to the slightly fortunate win over Brackley would keep everybody’s spirits up. Easier said than done I know but Hereford winning every other remaining game would surely secure them a top 7 place.

With Spennymoor away to Kiddy-beaters Sutton United the FA Trophy Quarter Finals, their fixtures are piling up. The Moors are in action for the next five Tuesdays though annoyingly weren’t performing while Hereford trudged North and floated South. That’s possibly deliberate as they usually travel to Hereford on Friday night.

Our visitors away record is modest with 4 wins, 5 draws and 6 defeats. Their victories came at Radcliffe, Farsley, Alfreton and Southport all clubs arguably out of form. Most of the better sides have defeated them. Our visitors are in 13th place and unlikely to trouble either the top 7 or the bottom 6.

Think Spenny goals and you immediately think of striker Glen Taylor. The big forward is 34 now and more vulnerable to injuries. He has 9 in 19 appearances including a hat trick over the sometimes-hopeless Rushall. Their big loss was top scorer Isaac Fletcher moving to Barrow. Spenny remain 4th top scorers though are now generally scoring less often. They also have striker Aiden Routledge who appears to be on permanent loan to any club other than his own Gateshead. Routledge played for South Shields on the opening day at Edgar Street. He looks the part but doesn’t settle anywhere.

There’s a familiar name in Mitch Hancox, who’s part of the visitors’ squad. He’s most often a midfield impact substitute. Spenny is his fifth club since he left us in 2022.

Pleasing to see the Spennymoor Fans Group are running a coach to Hereford. The more folk in the away section the better. Departure time for them is an alarming 7.15am. Can we expect an increased all-round gate following our WIN WIN WIN sequence? Disclaimer – if the law of sod applies don’t blame me.
